Brum Radio is growing: we are putting out more programming, more podcasts, and more mixes than ever before. To help us organise all this, we need more people behind the scenes as well. People who ‘get’ what Brum Radio stands for as an independent radio station and of course, people who love radio. If you think your skills and enthusiasm can help us build and grow the station, then please get in touch.

Please note we are unable to take on people for work experience/or work placements. We cannot offer volunteer roles to anyone under the age of 18.

Show Producers

Volunteer Role:

For several of our shows, we are looking for talented, enthusiastic producers. In this role, you will be responsible for one or several shows. You help set up the running order, organise guests, look after social media, upload the show to our listen again facility, and generally make sure the show runs like clockwork. 

Do you have good interpersonal skills and an organised and creative mind? Do you have experience with social media? Are you able to donate your free time on a regular basis so you can take good care of ‘your’ show(s)? Do you have a real affinity with radio? Then please get in touch.

Social Media Producer

Volunteer Role:

Do you have a good understanding of how social media can work to generate interest in an organisation or project? Are you creative and organised? We are looking for a social media producer with a good eye for visuals, attention to detail and good copywriting skills.

Our ideal social media producer is equally at home with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is an excellent communicator and has a real interest in broadcasting radio and/ or music.

Head of Production

Volunteer Role:

We are looking for a talented team-lead and problem solver to be our new Head of Production. In this role you will lead the production team, making sure all shows across the station run smoothly. You are a soundboard for our producers and are closely involved with content production – ready to step in to produce a show, should the producer be unable to.

You work closely with our station manager, our head of music and our scheduler, helping to implement the station’s strategies and keeping an eye on the quality of the output.
Some of your daily tasks may include
  • Live studio production,
  • Listening to and sometimes outputting the shows you’re responsible for,
  • Pitching or developing new feature/ show ideas
  • Managing staffing and recruitment,
  • Giving staff and presenter feedback,
  • Analysing performance and figures,
  • Future planning,
  • Attending management meetings,
  • Lots of problem-solving.
Do you have strong interpersonal skills, as you’ll manage show teams and need to motivate the people you work with to do their best? Are you calm under pressure and an excellent problem solver with an eye for detail, with the ability to resolve conflict and react positively to change? And are you an excellent communicator with a real interest in radio and/ or music? Then we would love to hear from you.
Like all roles at Brum Radio, this is a volunteer role.
As it is quite a big job to take on, we would be happy to make this a shared position, with two people working closely together and each taking on a share of the work.

Head of Music

Volunteer Role:
We are looking for a talented new Head of Music. In this role you are responsible for our music output, which means you will manage our music policy and playlist and work with the Station Manager on Brum Radio’s strategic direction.
As Head of Music it is also your job to make sure Brum Radio stays well connected in the music industry, so you will be keeping in touch with music labels and artists and regularly go to events and gigs.
You work closely with our station manager and our scheduler, helping to implement the station’s strategies. You also lead the music team, which includes several music producers and editors.
Some of your daily tasks may include:
  • Managing the playlist process for new music
  • Working with your music team in dealing with all submissions and making sure that all relevant genres are covered
  • Working with producers and presenters, ensuring they are sticking to our music policy
  • Forward planning around the station’s music policy
  • Liaising with labels and other external partners
  • Ensuring that we are adhering to our music licence in terms of the music we play.
What skills/ experience are we looking for?
You don’t need to have any particular qualifications for this role – but it would be very helpful to have experience in either radio production or within the wider music industry.
Our Head of Music needs to live and breathe music. You need to have excellent editorial judgement, being able to recognise quality beyond your personal tastes in music. You also have the confidence to take decisions objectively and without fear or favour. Pressure from labels or artists is like water off a duck’s back for you.
It is important that you are happy and confident in dealing with people both face to face and in writing, as you will be leading the music team and communicate with presenters and producers as well as with labels and artists on a daily basis.
You are organised – keeping track of new submissions, new playlist items, your contacts and events is an important part of the job.
You are happy to take direction from, and work with, our Station Manager about Brum Radio’s future plans and strategy.

Graphic Designer

Volunteer Role:

We are looking for a graphic designer to join our team to help create marketing and social media assets to promote our Radio and Podcast content each week.
It’s a fun fast moving volunteer role between 3 and 5 hours a week and you will have a hand in controlling the appearance of the Brum Radio brand.

Strong Photoshop skills are a must.

Audio/Studio Technician

Volunteer Role:

Our studio equipment is constantly in need of looking after, updating and improving. Is this something you have experience with or are interested in learning about? Our ideal studio technician likes a challenge: you enjoy being a troubleshooter and you are not fazed by a sudden buzz on the line. It would also be good if you live local to our Digbeth studio.

We would like our studio technician to do regular maintenance checks on our equipment and help us get updates and improvements in place and become an essential member of the team.

This role is perfect for anyone who likes working in a broadcast environment or who is looking to gain some hands-on experience in a studio.

Guest Booker

Volunteer Role:

We are looking for a talented station guest booker to find guests for Brum Radio’s shows and podcasts. These will be musicians, authors, artists, comedians, presenters and more. You will be in charge of finding the perfect match between guest and show, of knowing who will be in town, who has something to promote, or who could bring some great conversation to the table. You’ll work closely with our producers in planning guests for their shows and podcasts.

Our ideal guest booker is a great and confident communicator, is not afraid of the phone, knows how to write good emails, can be patient (and tenacious) when necessary and doesn’t easily take no for an answer.
